Grenada is a middle-income tri-island state located in the Eastern Caribbean. Its population is young, with about 40% under the age of 25.
Although Grenada ranks high in the United Nations Human Development Index (UNHDI), socio-economic development challenges persist due to structural problems common to Small Island Developing States (SIDS). About 60% of the population resides outside the main urban areas and nearly 40% lives below the poverty line.
The Grenadian economy has evolved over the last 40 years, moving from agriculture to service industries. The country remains vulnerable to natural hazards and shifts in the global economy.
Our priorities
The main objective of our development cooperation with Grenada is to contribute to improvements in the overall functioning of the country’s public health sector. Furthermore, the cooperation aims to improve the financial capability of the government to:
- achieve sector policy objectives around Primary Health Care (PHC) and sustainable financing of the sector
- promote PHC policies and reforms for a coherent and integrated policy and legislative environment across strategic sectors
- improve service delivery in the health sector, with emphasis on quality and access to integrated and comprehensive PHC services
- improve governance at the sector level for the efficient management of the PHC system
The effectiveness of our support is a joint priority for the EU and the Grenadian government. Together we strive to achieve coordinated and complementary programmes. We are currently working with Grenada under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) spanning 2014-2020.
Our programmes
The 11th EDF-Caribbean Regional Indicative Programme (RIP) seeks to implement the Joint Caribbean-EU strategy.
Interventions under the 11th EDF specifically incorporate measures aiming at assisting Grenada’s Ministry of Health in improving coordination and optimising the contributions and expertise offered by each partner. We anticipate that the 11th EDF will directly impact the quality and accessibility of health care in poor rural areas of Grenada and contribute to strengthened management systems in the health care sector.
Our support of €102 million goes to the regional cooperation and integration programme. As part of this effort, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will continue receiving support for its institutions and inclusive private sector development. We priorities improving the business environment, including travel and communication infrastructure.
