Following several years of instability, Mauritania has in more recent years managed to maintain internal stability.
Human rights and political governance consistently raise concerns and are closely followed by EU countries, the EU and human rights organisations.
A lack of sustainable and inclusive growth persists, with nearly a quarter of the population still food insecure, despite an improved economic situation. Through its role in the fight against crime and illegal immigration and its geographical proximity to Europe, Mauritania is a strategically important country in West Africa.
The EU’s development priorities in Mauritania are currently moving towards:
- economic growth/job creation
- gender equality
Our approach will aim to help Mauritania implement and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is also a key partner for migration management and for security and stability in the region. We actively support regional cooperation and the integration of Mauritania.
Under the current programming period (2014-2020), the EU has committed €160 million to Mauritania across the following sectors:
- Food security and sustainable agriculture – to promote the country’s potential in agriculture and livestock and reinforce efficiency and governance.
- Rule of law – to strengthen the general governance of the country, the credibility and the efficiency of its institutions, the protection of human rights and change the way the country is traditionally run.
- Health sector reform – focusing on capacity building in terms of governance and resources.
Under the Erasmus + programme, 14 students, researchers and staff have so far benefited from mobility grants and scholarships to study in Europe.
Alongside funding under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) National Indicative Programme (NIP) for 2014-2020, Mauritania also benefits from support under the EU Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF), the Partnership Agreement on Fisheries (FPA) and the Emergency Programme (PDU) for the Stabilisation of G5 Sahel Border Areas.
