Overview
The Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) aims to drive deep decarbonization in energy-intensive industries by creating harmonized global standards for low-carbon materials, improving transparency through robust data and reporting frameworks, and stimulating market demand via green public procurement (GPP). Through multi-stakeholder working groups, it seeks to strengthen international cooperation, develop actionable tools, and support the global transition to climate-neutral industrial production.
UNIDO and the Clean Energy Ministerial launched the IDDI in 2021. It is the largest and most diverse coalition of governments and private sector working to decarbonize heavy industries, starting with steel, cement and concrete. The IDDI aims to achieve that by stimulating the demand for low carbon materials through green public procurement (GPP). Its areas of focus are:
- Data and reporting: Establishing a common approach for collecting and sharing interoperable data to support consistent reporting on the procurement of low-and near-zero emission materials using tailored digital tools.
- Standard harmonization: Collaborating with governments, the private sector, civil society, and intergovernmental organizations to align standards and definitions for low- and near-zero emission products.
- Public procurement: Developing commitments and best practices to guide the public procurement of low- and near-zero emission materials.
The IDDI has established three technical Working Groups (WGs), bringing together government, private sector, civil society, intergovernmental organizations, trade associations, and leading experts from academia and think tanks. These WGs are improving data and reporting protocols on embodied carbon, harmonizing standards for products and exchanging best practices on green procurement policies. This includes the development of global standards, supply chain reporting systems and green public procurement.
