Recovery of the cocoa value chain in Nicaragua programme (NICACAO)

Overview

The objective of the project is to contribute to strengthening economic dynamism, environmental sustainability and climate resilience of the cocoa value chain in Nicaragua.

NICACAO is implemented in the Mining Triangle, in the municipalities of Siuna, Rosita and Bonanza. The project targets small producers and aims to reduce gender gaps while promoting the economic and social empowerment of women, young people, indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, creating opportunities to more equitably access to the resources and benefits of cocoa production.

The activities of the project include:

  1. Sustainability: Strengthening the capacities of small cocoa producers for environmental and climate sustainability and improved productivity;
  2. Management: Strengthening cocoa processing capacities, with the implementation of chain, circular economy, and business management approaches, of small cocoa producers;
  3. Development: Promoting the deforestation-free supply chain and traceability systems for products developed for small producers.
