Women in Informal Employment Globalizing Organizing (WIEGO)

Overview

WIEGO provides policy analysis, research, strategising and capacity building in order to inform policies to improve conditions for female informal workers.

WIEGO is a global network for worker organisations and networks (Institutional Members) and technical experts (Individual Members) working on informal employment of workers. WIEGO brings together three constituencies: worker organisations, researchers and statisticians, and development practitioners. WIEGO promotes change by improving the development of statistics and expanding knowledge, supporting global networks of workers in informal employment and workers’ organisations as they fight to influence local, national and international policies.

Therefore, WIEGO develops research, statistics and policy analysis to inform action led by women workers and their organisations to fight for a more just world of work. Specifically, WIEGO's core programmes are in the areas law, organization and representation, social protection, statistics, and urban policies. WIEGO also works in the following areas:

  1. Strategise, plan, raise funds, share lessons learned, communicate and build capacity to improve informal employment conditions.
  2. Create a global consensus on the conditions and causes of informality and establish a more precise concept and narrative informed by the WIEGO network and its allies.
