Turkey is hosting more than 3.7 million Syrian refugees which make the host country with the largest refugee population in the world. As of 18 August 2022, the number of Syrians registered in Turkey was 3 652 813.
Around 95% of Syrians under Temporary Protection (SuTP) in Turkey live amongst host communities all over the country but particularly in the south and south-eastern regions. FAO Turkey has been implementing the EU funded project 'Building Resilience of Syrians under Temporary Protection and Host Communities in Turkey through Supporting Socio-economic Integration and Creating Livelihood Opportunities’ for the last three years in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
The project focused on improving the skills of agriculture workers to increase their employment opportunities while promoting local integration and social cohesion. It is anticipated that, of these households, unemployed/under-employed SuTP and Turkish citizens will find some form of more-formal employment or self-employment/entrepreneurship through interventions and a further SuTP and Turkish agricultural workers will find more secure part-time and seasonal employment with decent working conditions – and their household annual incomes will be expected to increase by 20 percent within one year of the Action’s completion.
