The UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), held during the UN General Assembly in New York on 23 September 2021, set the stage for global food systems transformation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The UN Food System Summit also represented a milestone in the Year of Action for Nutrition, elevating nutrition as a key driver for food systems transformation. Moreover, it created links with other global summits and processes on climate and biodiversity, as well as with the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit in Tokyo on 7-8 December 2021. Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Imporved Nutrition (GAIN) was deeply involved in the UNFSS as Chair of Action Track 1 Ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all". Together with Leonard Mizzi, Head of Unit INTPA F3 "Agri-Food Systems and Fisheries" he will reflect on the lessons learnt from the UNFSS and discuss what actions need to be taken on Food Systems to go forward in the fight against all forms of malnutrition and sustainability of our food systems. The InfoPoint session will be the opportunity to understand why the UNFSS was so important, to recapitulate the major take-aways and to discuss what governments and other stakeholders need to do to go forward. It will also be the chance to look forward to the coming N4G Summit and discuss ways to keep the momentum on tackling the global nutrition challenges.
