Description
The Youth Summit will be opened by Jutta Urpilainen, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships; Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport of the Kingdom of Cambodia; Dato Lim Jock Hoi, ASEAN Secretary General and Qyira Yusri, Special Advisor on Youth to the European Commission.
During the plenary and breakout sessions, youth representatives will discuss the following themes
- democratic governance and basic rights in the EU and ASEAN
- security in the Indo-Pacific region
- the future of free trade agreements between EU-ASEAN and ASEAN Member States
- COVID-19 Mitigation and Recovery: an EU-ASEAN health partnership
- how EU-ASEAN cooperation in mitigation and adaptation can support the Paris Agreement objectives and sustainable development
- EU-ASEAN People-to-People Connectivity (partnership in digitalisation, education, employment and cultural exchange)
Their findings will be shared with the leaders at the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit that will be held the next day, December 14, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the partnership between the two regional organisations.
The EU-ASEAN Youth Summit is organised by the EU-ASEAN Young Leaders Forum, the Young Indo-Pacific Forum and the Youth Sounding Board.
2022 has been declared the“Year of Youth” both in the ASEAN region and in the EU, underlining the importance of youth in building a better, more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future.

About EU-ASEAN relations
The EU and the ASEAN have been dialogue partners since 1977, with the shared values and principles of a rules-based international order, effective and sustainable multilateralism, as well as free and fair trade. Following the 23rd EU-ASEAN Ministerial meeting on 1 December 2020, the EU and ASEAN opened a new chapter in their longstanding relationship by becoming strategic partners.
2022 marks 45-years since the establishment of the EU-ASEAN Dialogue Relations and many events have been organised throughout the year to celebrate the partnership, including the ASEAN-EU Cultural Festival and the EU ASEAN Young Leaders Forum.
On 14 December, the first ever EU-ASEAN Summit will be held in Brussels.
