Description

Perspectives on the road to the UNGA High Level Meeting on UHC this year
Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a crucial element of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. UHC ensures that all people have access to effective, good-quality health services when and where they need them, without suffering financial hardships.
In 2019, the heads of states and governments adopted a landmark Political Declaration on UHC at a High-Level Meeting of the United Nations confirming that health is a precondition, outcome, and an indicator of the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. They agreed to promote strong global, regional, and national partnerships with all relevant stakeholders to collaboratively support the efforts of UN Member States, as appropriate, to achieve UHC and other health-related targets of the SDGs.
However, the achievement of the targets is not on track and the COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world further away from achieving the overall SDGs. Nonetheless, many countries have learned that strong and resilient health systems are indispensable in the fight against the pandemic and in ensuring economic and social stability. Leveraging this momentum can help to come out of the pandemic and to better cope with future health crises. Many governments and multilateral organisations are in the process of doing so.
The WHO is more than ever tasked to coordinate and consolidate approaches between governments and organisations to bring the world back on track. These efforts will culminate in the UN High Level Meeting on UHC in 2023, which will identify gaps and solutions to accelerate progress towards the achievement of universal health coverage by 2030. This global recognition and renewed commitment will hopefully generate enough energy and resources to get UHC and the other health-related SDGs, back on track.
