InfoPoint conference: Just Transitions in Agriculture & Energy

ActionAid International’s session on ‘just transitions in agriculture and energy’ brings together key stakeholders to discuss principles and good practices for just transitions.

Zooming in on the primary sectors of agriculture and extractives, which are critical from a climate, biodiversity, food security and development perspective, ActionAid and partners share a mandate of facilitating local women-led solutions such as agroecology, and invite others to do the same. We will discuss what we can learn from good practices based on inclusion, sustainability and human rights for making sure the much needed transition in agriculture and energy systems is not only green but also just and feminist.

The session will provide practical experiences, solutions and principles for just transitions in line with the ambitions of European Union's Global Gateway Strategy. It will generate concrete ideas on solutions that work for people and the planet, for women's rights and addressing climate and environmental challenges, and what this means to global value chains.

While the need for just transition in the energy sector is broadly understood by policy makers and civil society, the practical implications and global value chain perspectives less so; and similar principles are also needed in the agriculture.

Outcomes

• Amid growing discourse and calls for "just transition" approaches, this session will provide key principles to ensure that transitions really are "just" in practice, and how these approaches can be applied to the agriculture and extractive sectors
• Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how just transitions must be inclusive and participatory, putting workers and communities at the centre of inclusive processes to shape alternative futures, while ensuring that inequalities are addressed and not exacerbated.
