Description
Youth health needs are underserved across the globe and an areas where data is often lacking. In the context of COVID-19 and generational and regional inequalities of healthcare access, International Alert will host a ‘how to’ session to present their approach of participatory evaluation of healthcare facilities in marginalised regions of Tunisia and the value of youth involvement in this process. The session will offer practitioners the chance to reflect on how this issue and our approach might relate to their context. We have been working on healthcare in Tunisia for nearly 10 years, including evaluations of and research on healthcare facilities and youth health needs, and supporting youth advocacy on healthcare provision (including mental health since the pandemic).
The session provides a practical approach to solving several of the key issues in global health programming that could be applied outside the Tunisian context, such as: engaging and meeting the needs of youth (a frequently overlooked group); addressing inequality in healthcare provision; investigating the mental health impacts of the pandemic; addressing youth’s assessment of public policies and impacts of austerity and best practices in gathering data on underserved communities and sensitive subjects. International Alert will also be able to share findings from a new study on the effects of austerity on the health of marginalised youth.
Outcomes: Participants will be introduced to the main aspects of Alert’s approach and their value, and will have an opportunity to discuss this approach and its potential applicability in other contexts. Participants will learn more about participatory approaches for gathering data and working on health - especially young people’s health - and hopefully be inspired to explore these further in their own work.
