InfoPoint conference: Sustainable Food Systems Transformation in Bhutan

Rugged topography and climate-related risks make the achievement of food self-sufficiency in Bhutan very difficult. The food system indeed is dominated by small landholders with high production costs and limited market access, leading to large food imports. Taking advantage of the Bhutanese PM’s visit to Brussels, the conference aims to showcase Bhutan's efforts to secure healthy and nutritious food while meeting environmental commitments and generating revenues for the smallholders who produce and process food. Supporting the sustainability of the Bhutanese food systems is one of the main focus of our partnership with the country. Speakers from various institutions will explore ways to achieve this, including by improving the attractiveness of agriculture and rural areas for youth and the role of the private sector. Encouraging sustainable, healthy, and diverse food diets could help address the double burden of malnutrition and obesity caused by changing food habits.
