Exchanging experiences, knowledge sharing and building solidarity among Women Land Defenders is a crucial component of constructing a network of Women Land Rights Defenders. Women land defenders are key actors of protecting land and territories, but they also face specific threats and cooperate to build common strategies to protect themselves.
This InfoPoint is part of ILC celebration of International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, through the witnesses of ILC members who attended a global exchange that took place in Colombia in June 2024.

Description
In June 2024, 40 women activists from grass-roots organisations belonging to ILC across the world came together. Among them several identify as women land rights defenders and actively engage at local, national and global level to protect women's rights in the field of land and territories. This Infopoint aims at presenting the experiences of these women and the importance of exchanging knowledge and building solidarity (as through the meeting organised by ILC), in the broader context, presented by two international experts, of specific needs and challenges of women defenders and the importance of land and territories for them. During the meeting leaders from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and EMENA, broke down the successes and challenges of practical initiatives in their advocacy efforts to achieving women land rights in order to overcome obstacles in their territories. Women Land Rights Defenders are crucial to protect land and territories, but doing so expose them to gender specific threats and challenges. There is a global need to engage with women defenders to support them, document their struggles and facilitate their voices to be heard in the public sphere.
