The newly published 2020 Aid Transparency Index (ATI) highlights remarkable improvements made by the European Commission, demonstrating its continued commitment to transparency.
The ATI 2020, published today by the NGO Publish What You Fund, assessed the transparency performance of 47 large development and humanitarian aid providers.
The Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (NEAR) has improved its performance, from 76.4 in 2018 to 78.7 this year, whereas the Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO) increased its score by over 10 points from 65.9 to 76.5. All services of the European Commission ranked in the ‘Good’ category (donors with a score of between 60 and 80).
Recent measures for improving transparency have significantly enhanced the EU’s performance, including increased access to information such as policy documents and reports, as well as improved availability of budgetary and geolocalisation data.
Improving transparency in the EU financial assistance is an ongoing effort and is essential for ensuring accountability and supporting informed decision making. The EU remains committed to developing innovative tools to present and use development cooperation data more effectively, such as the recently launched EU Aid Explorer tool which allows user to freely explore EU and Member States’ spending on official development assistance.
The Aid Transparency Index is based on a collection of data published by the respective providers in the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI). IATI hosts open live data published voluntarily by more than 1,150 organisations according to a common technical standard, thus providing information on their development and humanitarian activities that is comparable and easily accessible.
The European Commission, an IATI founding member, promotes the publication and use of IATI data among all EU Member States to improve data coverage and allow for more data use.
