Safeguarding climate – Towards a sustainable future

Join LIVE our #KAPTalks with Johan Rockström of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research who will discuss climate change challenges just before COP26. The event will be hybrid, physical and online. Join us on 6th October at 18:00 CET / 16:00 GMT. The lecture is hosted by ISEG-Lisbon School of Economics and Management / Centre for African and Development Studies.

The survival and prosperity of humans on planet Earth has been supported over the past 11,000 years by a remarkably stable climate: the geological Holocene epoch.

But in just the last 70 years, human pressures on the Earth system have been so high, and rising, leading to the scientific conclusion that we have entered a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. Human activity has become a defining factor in the state of our Earth system. While its resilience remains reasonably intact, evidence shows that we are seeing worrying signs of approaching, or tipping points. We may have even crossed them.

In his #KAPTalks, Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact, will walk through the latest assessment of whether we are at risk of crossing a planetary threshold. He’ll argue for setting scientific targets for a safe operating space on earth, and suggest the framing for planetary stewardship of a stabilized Earth for people and planet.
