Yesterday, the OECD Development Centre and the African Union Commission presented the third edition of the “Africa’s Development Dynamics” report. The report provides important economic data and policy recommendations to help policy-makers drive Africa’s digital transformation. It explores how African governments can take advantage of the ongoing wide-spread digital transformation to create quality jobs and achieve the aspirations set for the Agenda 2063. It targets four main policy areas for Africa’s digital transformation:

  1. Bridging the digital divide across regions;
  2. Supporting local innovation;
  3. Empowering own-account workers;
  4. Harmonising, implementing and monitoring digitalisation strategies.

During the online event, Koen Doens, Director-General for International Partnerships at the European Commission, underlined the role played by the EU in support of Africa’s digital transformation as part of a renewed African EU partnership, with initiatives such as the AU-EU Digital for Development Hub and the support to the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. The meeting featured speeches by Stefan Oswald, Director-General for the Marshall Plan with Africa, Displacement and Migration, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany and Ibrahim Mayaki, Chief Executive Officer at the African Union Development Agency/New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA/NEPAD). The report was made possible thanks to financial support from the European Union.
