Team Europe provides €160 million to help the most vulnerable in Sudan

On Sunday, the European Union and the World Bank signed an agreement worth €92.2 million for the Sudan Family Support Programme. France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden also announced their support, adding another €67 million. This brings the total ‘Team Europe’ contribution of the EU’s global response to the coronavirus pandemic in Sudan to €160 million.

This multi-donor trust fund will support Sudanese families in meeting the challenges of the economic reforms and strains of the global pandemic. These funds were previously announced at the Sudan Partnership Conference in June 2020 and their swift disbursement will allow for the programme to start this month.

The Sudan Family Support Programme is managed by the World Bank and implemented by the Sudanese government. The programme sets the backbone for the development of an effective and comprehensive Government-owned social protection system, while addressing the immediate economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic for the most vulnerable families in Sudan. This is achieved by delivering cash transfers to 80% of the country’s population, 32 million of the most vulnerable citizens, over 12 months.

Background information

In June 2020, the EU and Germany co-hosted the Sudan Partnership Conference. Partners pledged a total of $1.8 billion (€1.6 billion), with Team Europe (which includes EU institutions and the EU Member States) providing $867 million (€770 million) in development and humanitarian funding.
