Today, the UN Summit on Biodiversity is taking place under the theme 'Urgent Action on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' Many Heads of state and government are attending. President Ursula von der Leyen will make her statement at 5pm Brussels time.

The Summit is expected to demonstrate ambition to accelerate action on biodiversity, and thereby give momentum to the adoption of an effective and ambitious post 2020 global biodiversity framework at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Biodiversity Convention.

The event is taking place at the margins of the UN General assembly. It was preceded by a series of virtual events 'Nature for Life'.

On 28 September, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans made a powerful statement at the Nature Finance forum "This is nothing else than saving humanity".
