C. Woermann in Ghana – helping fight COVID-19 and protecting employees

The EU’s private sector has been actively contributing to solutions to the COVID crisis in partner countries, alongside the Team Europe public response. Beyond financial contributions to local pandemic funds or other types of financial donation, it has undertaken a wide range of initiatives to provide medical and protection equipment and other health solutions.

The C. Woermann company from Germany is a trading house with many decades of experience in Africa, where it distributes high-quality technical goods to local customers in manufacturing, agriculture, transport and construction. C. Woermann (Ghana) Limited has been based in Ghana for over 65 years.

The company has built up a team of competent and responsible local managers and employees. And because it operates very much like a family business, it has been doing its utmost to keep every one of its more than 90 employees in work in these difficult times.

"We feel part of the community. We had no hesitation in offering support."

The company has been doing its bit to help fight COVID-19 as well. For instance, it has supplied STIHL backpack sprayers to a local company in Accra, which was contracted to disinfect public facilities and markets to combat COVID-19 and sponsored some of these much-needed devices.

It has also provided the Accra Metropolitan Assembly with support to distribute various food items to around 400 residents in the Avenor district of Accra who have been left particularly disadvantaged by COVID-19, with many losing their jobs. Rice, oil, canned tomatoes and other items have been given to these vulnerable residents, who include elderly people, people with disabilities and pregnant women. The residents have welcomed the gesture and are hoping others will emulate it.

As C. Woermanns Managing Director Carsten Düwer explains, "We have been based in Avenor for over 30 years and feel part of the community. That’s why we had no hesitation in offering support when asked."
