Colas: a truly African company helping communities tackle Covid-19

The EU’s private sector has been actively contributing to solutions to the COVID crisis in partner countries, alongside the Team EU public response. Beyond financial contributions to local pandemic funds or other types of financial donations, it has undertaken a wide range of initiatives for the supply of medical and protection equipment and other health solutions.

Acting during the Covid-19 crisis

Since the Covid-19 crisis began, Colas Afrique has focused on guaranteeing the safety and health of all employees. Specific measures have been introduced at construction sites, production sites and head offices everywhere. The company has therefore been able to remain in operation, pay its employees in full and, at the same time, cement a relationship of trust and dialogue with its various entities. And as a result, it has helped support local economies.

On top of this, the unprecedented nature of this crisis has led to a virtuous circle of generosity in all the countries where Colas operates. Every day, new initiatives are emerging. Here are a few examples.

In Morocco, Colas has been involved in providing food baskets to over 1 300 of the poorest families, as part of an initiative that continues to reach all cities in the country. It has also delivered an ambulance on behalf of the Ministry of Health and contributed to the Covid-19 Solidarity Fund.

In Gabon and Ivory Coast, the company has helped distribute foodstuffs and medical equipment. Also in Gabon, it has donated medical equipment to Akanda Hospital.

A joint initiative between Colas and AMREF Health Africa in Senegal has provided health services to vulnerable people in cities and remote areas alike.

Last but not least, the company has donated 4 000 masks to the city of Tana in Madagascar.

This commitment to local communities throughout Africa, especially during the current pandemic, is particularly important in countries where Colas has employed hundreds of people for decades. It is why Colas has come to be seen as a truly local company in Africa.
