The EU launched the first results of a global mapping of diaspora engagement on the newly created website www.diasporafordevelopment.eu - This mapping is part of the EU Global Diaspora Facility (EUDiF).

272 million people live outside of their country of origin, with more than half in Europe and Northern America (IOM World Migration Report 2020). Whilst not all these people are actively maintaining links with their countries of origin, a significant proportion is active in supporting the development of their country of origin (or heritage for descendants of migrants). Maximising the potential of this ‘global diaspora’ is the focus of the EU Global Diaspora Facility (EUDiF). The project runs from June 2019 to the end of 2022 and is implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

The EUDiF project is the first EU-funded project to take a global approach to consolidate efforts on diaspora engagement for development. The first step on this journey has been to take stock of existing diaspora engagement policies, priorities and practices around the world. EUDiF has worked with a team of researchers with regional expertise to gather information on 50 countries. All the information is now available to explore via an interactive map on EUDiF’s new website, an open-access knowledge hub on diaspora engagement. There are factsheets available to download for the first 50 countries and statistics available on these and the rest of the EU's partner countries.

Through the mapping, EUDiF has also begun to catalogue Europe-based diaspora organisations that are active in the development of the country of heritage and will soon invite diaspora organisations to share success stories of their development work.

EUDiF is now expanding its research by mapping a further 50 countries; these will be available by the end of 2020. At the same time, the interim results are being used to design targeted capacity building activities and to identify opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. The mapping results also feed the pilot EUDiF diaspora expertise mechanism.
