Coastal Protection Beira in Mozambique

Overview

Coastal city Beira in Mozambique is vulnerable to coastal erosion, tropical storms, sea-level rise, coastal and urban floods and extreme rainfall events. Currently, annual average damage due to coastal flooding is estimated around 6 million US$/year. The port is an important transport corridor to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The project aims at significantly increasing Beira’s coastal flood protection level and stopping ongoing long-term erosion trends for the coming decades using nature-based, integrated and tailor-made approaches for Beira's diverse coastline which will greatly reduce threats to livelihoods. Moreover, integration with the urban interface of the city is foreseen to optimize public benefits.

The project includes the development, construction, supervision, and support for subsequent use/maintenance of coastal flood/erosion protection systems.
