Overview
This flagship project supports Cabo Verde’s transition to clean energy by implementing a series of interconnected electricity generation, transmission, and storage projects under the National Electricity Masterplan (2018–2040). The central component is a pumped storage facility on Santiago, the archipelago’s main island, which will store renewable energy and improve grid stability.
Additional project components are expected to include:
- Modernisation, digitalisation, and reinforcement of the national electricity grid (SMART grid)
- Installation of batteries and converters to enhance energy storage and flexibility
- Energy efficiency measures, including improvements to public lighting
- Government support for wind and solar energy projects developed by independent power producers
Together, these efforts aim to eliminate Cabo Verde’s dependence on fossil fuels by 2040. The project will ensure that all new storage capacity, especially the pumped storage system, will be fully dedicated to renewable energy use, supporting a resilient and sustainable power system.
