Overview
These two dams will considerably reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the share of the renewable energy in the country, allowing Fiji to get closer to its carbon neutrality goal.
In practice, the project will allow an estimated 15% increase of the share of renewable energy in Viti Levu, the largest island of Fiji hosting close to 70% of the total population.
The EU and EIB have concluded feasibility studies and the social and environmental impact assessments (SEIA) in March 2023. These results aimed to provide the Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) Board and the relevant authorities with the knowledge to make an informed decision.
In May 2024, EFL requested the European Investment Bank to investigate and confirm if the dam height of Qaliwana dam can be increased, with the objective to raise the storage capacity of the reservoir and therefore better integrate upcoming solar energy projects promoted by the government, to meet the Fijian nationally determined contributions. Results of some studies are still expected to move on with the project.
