Construction of Ruzizi III hydropower plant for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi

Overview

As part of the Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative, the Ruzizi III regional hydroelectric project involves the construction of a 206 MW run-of-river power plant located on the Ruzizi River, which marks the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi. It is the third hydroelectric development on the river, following Ruzizi I (1959) and Ruzizi II (1989).

The project aims to promote economic and social development in the three CEPGL member countries by strengthening regional cooperation and energy integration. It will increase energy availability, improve the quality of electricity services, expand access to electricity, reduce high energy costs, and enhance the well-being of local populations.
