High-tension electric interconnection line between Nouakchott and Kiffa in Mauritania

Overview

This flagship project will stimulate the increase in solar energy production capacity and universal  electricity access in Mauritania, through the deployment of high-tension electricity networks.

Its objectives include the construction of a 225 kV high-voltage transmission line (516km) from Nouakchott to Kiffa in Mauritania. This infrastructure will form part of the OMVS (Organisation de mise en valeur du Fleuve Sénégal) network. It will also target the construction of several transformer substations along the high-tension line to ensure efficient power distribution.

The project aims to ensure universal access to electricity in the project service areas, thanks to rural electrification components, and to integrate large-scale renewable energy capacities, particularly solar PV and wind, into the national and regional electricity network, as well as to develop interconnection networks to the regional and continental market.

This project is also part of the trans-Sahelian backbone of the Desert to Power (DtP) initiative which aims at establishing a transcontinental high-tension electricity interconnection line, which beyond the EIB and the EC is also financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Agence Française de Développement (AFD), World Bank, Islamic Development Bank (IDB), West African Development Bank (BOAD), and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
