Implementation of the Amazon Basin TEI and the Amazonia+ programme to prevent deforestation in Central America

Overview

The Amazon Basin Team Europe Initiative (TEI) is a coordinated, multi-country effort by the EU, its Member States, and institutions to support Amazon Basin countries in tackling deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

It serves as a coordination mechanism to align strategic frameworks and amplify existing actions by Team Europe actors across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

It focuses on four pillars: sustainable natural resource management, inclusive green growth, environmental governance and human rights, and sustainable finance.

This TEI aims to generate transformative impact by fostering joint policy dialogue, coordinated investments, and knowledge sharing among European and local partners. It complements national efforts, creates synergies at the regional level, and promotes coherence with other EU initiatives such as the EU Green Deal and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation.

Through this approach, Team Europe seeks to "work better together" for climate, biodiversity, and the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon. Some key activities include: The regional Amazonia+ programme focusing on forest fires and indigenous forest governance; The Ukumari bio-economy project in Ecuador; Horizon Europe research projects across the Basin; and Sustainable livelihoods in Guyana and Suriname.
