Irrigation infrastructure in Somalia

Overview

The programme aims at rehabilitating 350 Km of canals along the Shabelle and Juba river in Somalia. This will in turn lead to increasing productivity of sustainable agri-food systems and strengthening key value chains such as sesame and sorghum.

The programme contributes to food security in Somalia by increasing local agri-food production and building the resilience to food crisis amongst the communities in Jubaland, Hirshabele, and South-West State.

The programme's key expected outcomes are:

  • restoring irrigation systems
  • increasing selected crop local production and productivity
  • improving farmer productivity and incomes
  • building capacity of public institutions
  • increasing market access and competitiveness
  • enhancing governance in priority value chains (in particular sorghum and sesame).
