Msimbazi Basin Development Project in Tanzania

Overview

Extreme rainfall, intensified by climate change coupled with rapid and large urban growth has made residents of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) increasingly vulnerable to river flash flooding. By 2075, damages from a once in a two-year flood event could exceed 100 million USD, with the potential for significant loss of life.

The flood protection and dredging project is a crucial component of the broader Lower Msimbazi Basin Upgrading project co-funded by the World Bank and Spain, has a clear objective to enhance flood resilience and improve living conditions in Dar es Salaam. Specifically, it will concentrate on transforming flood prone zones into safe, habitable areas with urban development potential. This also includes the creation of a city park area, which will functions as a buffer zone, and the establishment of a new residential area. The project is related to a €30 million Grant Arrangement with Invest International and will be managed by the Tanzania President's Office Regional Administration and Local Government in Dar es Salaam.
