Overview
The Northern EU Gateways project is supporting the preparation of three new cable investments: two submarine cable projects Far North Fiber (FNF) and C-Lion2, as well as Terrestrial Backbone Finland (TBF).
The objective is to improve the backbone connectivity within the European Union (EU) and strengthen the EU's links with third countries.
As its first key deliverable, the project prepared the 2030 Vision, a high-level plan for new submarine and terrestrial cable systems connecting EU Member States with each other and with oversea territories and third countries that the EU has strong ties with.
The Connect Europe Facility has been key to support the development of the FNF, with EUR 42 million having been granted through three calls, to support the cable route study, the landing stations and the subsea infrastructure itself. As part of this wider project, Tusass — the Greenlandic postal and telecommunications company —successfully secured EUR 54.7 million in grants from the Connecting Europe Facility to establish a submarine cable and landing stations between Aasiaat and Qaqortoq (linking North/Central West Greenland and South Greenland) where most of the Greenlandic population lives.
