Promoting sustainable coastal agricultural practices in the Gulf of Tunis

Overview

This flagship project consists in enhancing climate resilience and sustainable agriculture in the Ghar El Melh wetland area of Tunisia through smart irrigation, under the ACCISI-GEM initiative led by Malta’s Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, in partnership with the GEF UNEP MedProgramme.

Main project activities include:

  • Implementing a holistic, community-based, gender-sensitive, and partnership-driven approach to sustainable coastal agriculture using a WEFE Nexus lens.
  • Expanding the application of smart irrigation—originally piloted under the GEMWET project—to five additional farms, integrating renewable energy and hydrological monitoring of the wetlands.
  • Launching a Policy Dialogue to foster an enabling environment and explore financial incentives for national-level upscaling and regional dissemination.
  • Continuing efforts in 2025 to unlock the project’s transformational potential for sustainable water use and reducing inequalities.
