Overview
This flagship project consists in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in Montenegro. The overall objective of these investments is to help bring Montenegro closer to EU environmental standards, improving public health, the environment and municipal services and enhancing the country's attractiveness for tourism and economic diversification.
The water and sanitation infrastructure projects are planned in the towns of Cetinje, Tivat, Kotor, Nikic, Pljevlja and Ulcinj (Montenegro). They include investments in wastewater treatment plants, related infrastructure and water supply systems. All projects are expected to start by end of 2025 with construction in Kotor and Tivat already kicking off in 2024. Completion of all projects is expected in 2028. In Ulcinj (Montenegro), the new wastewater treatment plant will stop the discharge of untreated effluents into the Adriatic Sea which endangers the Ulcinj Salina, a protected wetland of international importance. In the Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site and of utmost importance for Montenegro's tourist economy, the investment project will enable sanitation and reduce water losses.
