Rehabilitation and modernisation of the national transmission grid in Ethiopia

Overview

This Global Gateway flagship project supports Ethiopia’s clean energy transition and digital transformation by improving the reliability, efficiency, and security of electricity supply, promoting renewable energy integration, climate resilience, regional power integration, energy sector professionalisation and digital connectivity.

Key actions include the rehabilitation and modernisation of the national transmission grid, the construction of a cybersecure National Load Dispatch Centre, and upgrades to the Ethiopia–Kenya and Ethiopia–Djibouti interconnectors.

The project also covers the rehabilitation of the Ashegoda wind farm (120 MW) in Tigray and transaction support for renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) projects.

Additionally, optical ground wire (OPGW) technology will be installed on existing transmission lines, enabling Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) to lease broadband capacity to telecom operators. The project will further strengthen EEP’s technical and organisational capacity through an Energy Training Centre, implementation support, change management, gender mainstreaming, asset management, and procurement standardisation.
