Overview
The Southern Hydrogen Corridor is a hydrogen pipeline project aimed at connecting North Africa, Italy, Austria and Germany. The corridor seeks to accelerate the energy transition in Africa and Europe by enabling large-scale, competitive renewable hydrogen supply, supporting climate objectives, creating socio-economic values and strengthening energy cooperation with partner countries Algeria and Tunisia. It will foster regional investments in the local renewable energy and hydrogen development, and create economic opportunities including jobs and additional local water supply, while improving energy system integration between Europe and the Southern Neighbourhood. Therefore, the Corridor is a major infrastructure investment that serves the mutual strategic interest of both the EU and the partner countries in North Africa while addressing the critical challenges of the energy transition.
The Corridor has political endorsement of Austria, Italy, Germany, Tunisia and Algeria, who have signed a ministerial Joint Declaration of Political Intent on the development of the corridor 21th of January 2025. In addition, there is strong support from companies involved in production, transport and offtake of hydrogen along the whole Corridor. Transmission operators have started their feasibility studies, the development of the first projects is underway in Tunisia and Algeria and import alliances are being developed in the EU.
