Overview
The flagship project on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is an umbrella initiative for a wide array of projects to support the development, production, and use of sustainable aviation fuels globally, contributing to the attainment of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)'s goal of net-zero emissions from international aviation by 2050.
This project will also support achieving the objectives of the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and is in line with the Global Gateway strategy's pledge to enhance sustainable transport connections. The EU has supported the promotion of SAF externally for some years, including in the context of projects financed by the EU and implemented by ICAO and by European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
An initial set of ongoing activities under this Global Gateway flagship initiative include the EU's project contributing to ICAO's Assistance, Capacity-building and Training-SAF programme which covers 14 African countries and India.
The project is being implemented by ICAO and EASA, with feasibility and business implementation studies and capacity building activities expected to pave the way for the future production of SAF in the participating countries. Additional activities are being carried out in other regions. For example, in South-East Asia, EASA is supporting the implementation of ASEAN's Sustainable Aviation Action Plan (ASAAP), including the development of an ASEAN Sustainable Aviation Roadmap.
