Towards Green Growth: support to The Gambia and its citizens in ensuring an efficient and reliable access to energy

Overview

This flagship project concerns the implementation of a renewable energy (solar) production, transmission, and distribution programme in the Gambia. Its main objective is to improve electricity services in The Gambia.

The project includes four components:

  • Component 1 - An increase in generation capacity through an on-grid utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a total installed capacity of up to 20 MWp including an associated battery energy storage station
  • Component 2 - An increase in transmission and distribution capacity by reinforcing and expanding the national grid and prepare for its connection to the regional power system, improve security of supply, reduce technical losses and increase its renewable energy up-take capacity
  • Component 3 - Urgent institutional support for electricity sector turnaround including preparation and implementation support to Component 1 and 2
  • Component 4 - On-grid and off-grid PV/battery systems installation, operation and maintenance for up to 1100 schools and health facilities which are currently not connected to a reliable electricity system, especially in remote areas of the country. This component includes a significant amount of Technical Assistance (TA) to prepare the grounds for its implementation
