Overview
This flagship initiative aims to drive commercially viable sargassum transformation in the Caribbean, creating jobs and fostering economic growth while easing pressure on public services. It consolidates efforts into a single, coordinated approach toward building a sustainable sargassum value chain.
The project focuses on:
- advancing research to enable evidence-based action (including forecasting, pretreatment, storage, waste management, and transformation)
- strengthening local capacities, policy frameworks, and regulations to support sargassum containment, collection, and processing
- developing proof of concept and de-risking investment in commercial-scale transformation
- fostering regional, multi-stakeholder dialogue to ensure alignment and scalability
Concrete solutions are being developed through Expression of Interest (EoI) processes launched or in preparation in Grenada, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, to match local needs with private sector and research-based innovations.
