Overview
This project involves the construction of a 400 kV transmission line between Olwiyo in northern Uganda and Juba, the capital of South Sudan, covering approximately 300 km. It includes a new substation in Bibia (Uganda), upgrades to existing substations in Karuma and Olwiyo, a new substation in Gumbo (South Sudan), and distribution grid extensions in Juba and Nimule. An optical ground wire will be installed to enable reliable, faster internet connectivity and greater data carrying capacities.
The project aims to boost cross-border power trade by supplying surplus clean energy from Uganda to help address South Sudan’s electricity deficit. By providing stable and affordable power supply, it supports economic development, job creation, and access to basic services, key drivers of national cohesion and resilience, while reducing fragility and conflict in South Sudan.
