Upgrade of Santo Domingo’s urban transport in Dominican Republic

Overview

This initiative aims at supporting Dominican authorities, at local and national levels, to transition towards more sustainable urban mobility.

The initiative contributes to increasing the capacity of line 2 of the Santo Domingo metro by upgrading the platforms and technical systems and increasing the capacity of the trains. It will also support the main institutional actors in the transport sector. The initiative will support INTRANT (the transport governing body) in areas such as traffic and parking management, para-transit, active modes and ticketing interoperability, with the objective of implementing on-the-ground measures previously analysed. It will also provide technical support to a new actor in the development of transportation infrastructure projects (FITRAM), assisting them in the completion of technical, institutional, and financial studies. Finally, it will support OPRET, owner and operator of the Santo Domingo metro, in planning the modernisation of its metro train fleet and signalling system.

Developing an efficient, affordable and sustainable urban transport infrastructure will increase access to economic opportunities and help to combat air pollution and meet the national emission reduction target.
