Ai ba Futuru (Partnership for Sustainable Agroforestry – PSAF), is a project co-financed by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF).

This 5-year project is targeting 4,000 marginalised households in 40 selected villages from the 4 municipalities, planting 3 million trees on approx. 6,000 hectares of land over the next 4 years. In 2018-19, the project has started working in 15 of the 40 villages. Ai ba Futuru aims at planting 3 million trees – which goes beyond the Government’s goal of planting 1 million tress

The project is in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda, contributing primarily to the progressive achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to achieve Goal 1 - No Poverty, Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 13 - Climate Action, Goal 15 - Life on Earth, and Goal 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

It is driven by a strong collaboration, working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and local authorities, including the President of the municipality of Baucau and municipal administrators as well traditional chiefs, and other partners, such as Quinta Portugal, Ho Musan Ida and xpand Foundation.

Results

Across the four municipalities, trees were planted in 10 administrative posts, reaching 1 304 households. Tree seedlings included a range of species, such as mahogany, teak, sandalwood, ai-saria, pitai-china, leucaena, rosewood, rambuktan, orange, snake fruit, mango and cashew nut. The large majority of tree seedlings were planted on private land by marginalised farmers, who will benefit in the long run from better employment opportunities in the agroforestry sector.
