A New Generation of Technical Institutes for Ecuador

Ecuador is reforming its higher education system to drive productivity and diversify its economy. As part of this reform, universities are being complemented by higher technological institutes offering a dual model of vocational education. This model combines apprenticeships on the job with technical and technological training that leads to recognised professional qualifications with a clear labour market orientation. 

Objectives

Equipping Ecuador's students with the skills employers need 

The project supports the construction, extension, rehabilitation and equipping of 21 Technical and Technological Institutes (TTIs) at post-secondary level, as an essential part of Ecuador's national educational reform. The EU contribution specifically finances the construction of a new institute in Portoviejo, the city most affected by the April 2016 earthquake, marking an important step in the city's long-term recovery. 

Project activities

The project has two core activities: 

• The construction, refurbishment and equipping of technical and technological institutes
• Technical assistance for the design of study curricula and the analysis of labour market trends 

(Expected) Results

The project is expected to advance Ecuador's higher education dual system, increase its share of total student enrolment relative to public universities and raise its relevance to the labour market.
