InfoPoint conference: Achievements and future of the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative

Marking the 25th Anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

More than one third of women worldwide are estimated to have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime. That’s 736 million women. In 2017, the EU and the UN launched the Spotlight Initiative to make a difference.

Six years since its launch, the Spotlight Initiative’s initial phase has been fully implemented in 5 regions through 26 country programmes, 6 regional programmes and 2 programmes with UN Trust Funds. Its success has led to the Initiative being selected as one of the 12 High Impact Initiatives for its impact across all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Spotlight Initiative’s comprehensive approach to ending violence against women and girls has led to more transformative, sustainable results and important lessons. As Spotlight enters its next phase, the EU continues to support the second phase of Spotlight at both global and country levels, in order to sustain the achievements and knowledge the initiative has built and to scale up efforts against all forms of gender-based violence.
