Human trafficking and migrant smuggling are two of the most prevalent and heinous forms of transnational organised crime, as well as global challenges that cannot be addressed only at the national level. The European Commission continues to prioritise the need to tackle these crimes at the international level, most recently in the Call to Action - Global Alliance to Counter Migrant Smuggling in November 2023 but also in the EU Strategy on Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings (2021-2025).

On the occasion of the successful completion of the joint EU-UNODC-IOM Global Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling (GLO.ACT) – Asia and the Middle East (2018-2024), implemented in partnership in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and separately in Bangladesh - the EU, UNODC and IOM are convening a panel discussion to share best practices and learning in addressing human trafficking and migrant smuggling in these dynamic and challenging contexts.
The aim of this conference is to raise awareness around the issues of human trafficking and migrant smuggling, whilst showcasing the practical achievements of the EU-UNODC-IOM collaboration at the country, regional and transregional levels. It will also demonstrate how the technical cooperation has fed into an ever-deepening partnership and exchange of ideas on key areas of international law and policy in relation to these complex and challenging crimes. A senior official from a partner country will share their views about the benefits of this partnership and how the approach works in practice, with a view to exploring ways forward to an enhanced operational cooperation. Likewise, an NGO partner/victim-service provider will speak to the provision of victim support in the context of the joint action.
