ECOFAC6: Preserving biodiversity and fragile ecosystems in Central Africa

The ECOFAC6 programme promotes a green economy characterised by sustainable and inclusive economic development, as well as the fight against climate change.

Objectives

ECOFAC6 gives direct support to nearly 17 protected areas spread over 7 different states and 8 priority landscapes for conservation.

The aim is to contribute to a green economy characterised by sustainable and inclusive economic development, as well as the fight against climate change.

Diverse target areas

The diversity of the sites covers all the representative natural environments of the Central African region, from the savannas of the Sahel to the forests of the Congo Basin, the island landscapes of Sao Tomé and Principe, and the protected marine area of Mayumba in Gabon.

Given the plurality of situations in the areas concerned, the programme's activities are adapted according to the contexts and specificities of each site. Consultation platforms facilitate the coordination of socio-economic activities and the sustainable management of ecosystem services integrated into local development plans.

Local populations are involved in the sustainable management of natural resources and represented in the structures for steering and monitoring protected areas. The promotion of natural resources, for example through ecotourism, ensures a source of sustainable financing for conservation, and significant benefits for local populations.
