Improving synergies between social protection and public finance management

Programme on improving synergies between Social Protection and Public Finance Management has been officially launched

The European Union, Global Coalition for Social Protection Floors, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF have officially launched an innovative partnership on improving synergies between social protection and public finance management.

The € 22.9 million thematic flagship programme aims at strengthening social protection systems and ensuring sustainable financing, while improving public finance management.

The programme is providing in-depth and long-term support to eight countries (Angola, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Nepal, Paraguay, Senegal, and Uganda) to build and strengthen their social protection systems. Moreover, additional countries will be receiving on-demand technical advisory services to strengthen and expand their social protection systems.

COVID-19 is increasing social and economic inequalities worldwide and demonstrates the importance of the key pillars of the sustainable development agenda, which are access to decent work, health and social protection, which strengthen a country’s overall resilience to shocks

Henriette Geiger, Director, People and Peace, Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development, European Commission.

Social protection is indispensable for achieving inclusive and sustainable growth, eliminating poverty and reducing inequality, and alleviating shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
