Construction of Bus Rapid Transit system in Nairobi, Kenya

Overview

This project supports the development, construction, and operationalisation of a 12.4 km clean Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 3 in Nairobi.

It aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and is part of Kenya’s national TEI Green Deal. Activities include the construction of BRT and feeder stations, a park-and-ride facility at a railway station, and two interchanges with the commuter rail. The project will also upgrade infrastructure along the BRT corridor, including road intersections, stations, and depots. Additional components involve an integrated ticketing system and CCTV for improved efficiency and safety.

The expected outcome is to initiate a shift towards electrified transport in Kenya. Given the country’s growing renewable energy production, this transition will bring multiple environmental and economic benefits.

Financing agreements are expected in the first half of 2025, paving the way for implementation.
