Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country with an area of 274,200 square kilometers. The macroeconomic situation is stable but poverty and social inequality persist. Burkina Faso's population has more than tripled since the 60s, with an average current rate of population growth of 3.1% per year, which poses a real challenge in terms of wealth creation, food security and access to basic social services.

Traditionally a stable country in a volatile region, Burkina Faso remains fragile, due, among other things, to regional insecurity from the crisis in northern Mali. In addition, the country faces food insecurity.

Our priorities

Our main development and cooperation priorities are:

  • Social needs: nutrition, resilience and related agricultural issues (30% of children under 5 years of age suffer from chronic malnutrition), health (the government has announced universal health coverage to reduce maternal and child mortality, but has challenges in delivering) and water (barely 12% have access to improved sanitation in rural areas). Whenever possible, fragile regions are being specifically considered.
  • Coping with employment issues: through resilience initiatives and employment facilitation for young people and women in the North and Sahel regions (€45 million).
  • Justice sector support: through the on-going programme financed by the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) and a new security/justice programme foreseen in 2019.

Our programmes

Under the 11th EDF National Indicative Programme covering the 2014-2020 period allocates €623 million. The 3 main priorities are:

  • Good governance: aiming to foster domestic accountability and strengthen national control mechanisms to improve national and local governance and adherence to fundamental values.
  • Health: to contribute to the implementation of the National Health Development Plan (PNDS 2011-2020) with the following specific priorities: governance of the health sector, improvement of local service delivery, equal access to services, human resource development, improvement of the health management information system and increasing the financial accessibility of the system.
  • Food security: to help food and nutrition security and improve access to drinking water and sanitation for strong and sustainable economic growth. Environment and climate change will be considered in our support.
