Comoros

The Union of the Comoros comprises three small islands (Anjouan, Grande Comore, Mohéli) in the Mozambique Channel. Its population density causes pressure on natural resources, making ecosystems preservation a national priority.

Our partnership

The EU supports the Comoros in the structural transformation of the country’s economy in line with ‘’Plan Comores Emergent 2020-2030’’, and the EU Global Gateway Strategy.

Team Europe’s presence has increased  in recent years and brings together the EU, France, Région Réunion (managing Interreg funds) and the European Investment Bank. As part of the Neighborhood Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI-Global Europe), the EU has allocated €41 million in grants to the partnership with the Union of the Comoros over the period 2021-2024 and 5 million to guarantee concessional loans. Comoros also benefits from the continental Team Europe Initiative on ‘Investing in Young Businesses in Africa’ in support of entrepreneurs, young people and women.

Governance

  • Participation and protection of Women, Youth and Civil Society in the Union of the Comoros (Shawiri – “solutions), promotes a rights-based approach to strengthen citizen participation and social protection of women and young people by (i) developing a local ecosystem favourable to social protection and civic participation, (ii) supporting better structuring of civil society in terms of protection and participation of women and young people.
