Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen took part today in the high-level segment of the Global Education Meeting “Invest now for the recovery and the futures of education” co-hosted by UNESCO and the Government of France in Paris.

In her intervention, Commissioner Urpilainen emphasized the need for global leaders to invest more and better together to empower the world’s young people to lead the transition to a greener, fairer, and more equitable planet.

For its part, the European Union is committed to investing more in education worldwide.

At the start of her mandate, Commissioner Urpilainen committed to increasing financing for education from 7% to 10% of her portfolio. Today, Commissioner Urpilainen announced that the EU is going to exceed this objective.

According to initial estimates, by 2027, the European Union will devote over 6 billion euros to improving education worldwide. This is two billion euros more than during the previous funding period, representing around 13% of the portfolio.

The Commissioner also highlighted the role of education as the most powerful enabler of socio-economic change and of the achievement of other Sustainable Development Goals.

She finished with a poignant reminder of the need to act now in order to avoid losing decades of progress on global education.

The world is home to the largest generation of young people in history, a generation whose education has suffered profoundly due to COVID-19.

The pandemic has left hundreds of millions of students out of school.

Let’s work together to bring them back on track!”
