The European Commission is coordinating a common European response to the outbreak of COVID-19. We are taking resolute action to reinforce our public health sectors and mitigate the socio-economic impact in the European Union. We are mobilising all means at our disposal to help our Member States coordinate their national responses and are providing objective information about the spread of the virus and effective efforts to contain it.

EU pledge

Already on 24 February, the European Commission pledged €232 million to tackle the outbreak of Coronavirus globally and the pledged amount keeps on rising.
Around €60 million of the package will help boost the emergency preparedness and response in Africa, including €5 million for the Pasteur Institute in Dakar.
€114 million of these funds will be channelled through the WHO.

Africa

The European Commission is in close contact with the World Health Organization (WHO) to support countries most at risk for human transmission, with a focus on African countries with the most fragile health systems.

Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, the EU was already supporting the health care systems in 13 African countries with 1.1 billion euros. These 13 countries are Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea (Conakry), Guinea Bissau, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan, Zimbabwe.
